What You Should Already Know

This course is part 2 of a two-part series. You should have already successfully completed Child Development 1.

Learning Outcomes

When you have completed this course, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the growth and development of the neonate, the infant, the toddler, the preschooler, the school-age child, and the adolescent.
  2. Critique appropriate positive discipline/ guidance and parenting techniques.
  3. Discuss the health and wellness considerations for each age and stage.
  4. Describe the criteria for quality care. Interpret challenging times and coping skills of children. Discuss special needs of exceptional and gifted children.

Course Materials

This course is self-contained, meaning that there is not an additional text book. All you will need is a pencil and a little bit of energy and excitement to get you through!

Course Organization

This course contains seven units. Each unit contains lessons, discussion material, Self Check questions, and a quiz. Some units also include pretests, thought questions, and journal entry assignments.

Assignments

Self Checks

Self Check assignments are ungraded assignments you can use to measure your own understanding.

Unit Quizzes

Each quiz contains 10–30 questions. You should answer the questions carefully. Be sure that you understand the concepts in each lesson in the unit before completing the unit quiz assignment.

Exams

The final exam only contains 30 questions, one question from each lesson taught throughout the entire course. Because the final exam is so short, each question will weigh heavily on your grade. You should prepare very well before taking the exam. The final exam counts for 30% of your grade. The percentages from the quizzes and the final exam will be combined to make up your final grade.

Course Policies

Assignments

Summary:  7 computer-graded assignments, may be resubmitted once for a fee

Each unit quiz contains 10–30 questions. You should answer the quiz questions carefully. Be sure that you understand each unit before completing the assignment.

Final Exam

Summary: 1 proctored, computer-graded exam, may retake once for a fee, must pass to earn credit for the course

You must pass the final exam with a score of sixty percent or higher in order to pass this course. If you fail the final exam, you may retake the exam once for a fee.

Course Duration

You have 1 year to complete this course. You may purchase one 3-month extension if you need more than a year to complete this course. Because of the nature of some assignments, you will not be able to complete this course in less than 2 months.

Preventing & Responding to Sexual Misconduct

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Brigham Young University prohibits unlawful sex discrimination against any participant in its education programs or activities. The university also prohibits sexual harassment—including sexual violence—committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking are considered forms of "Sexual Misconduct" prohibited by the university.

University policy requires all university employees in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report all incidents of Sexual Misconduct that come to their attention in any way, including but not limited to face-to-face conversations, a written class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post.
