What You Should Already Know

As a prerequisite for Chemistry 43, you should have completed algebra and have a good foundation in mathematics. The more math background you have, the better you will understand chemistry. Chemistry uses mathematics extensively as a tool. There are some math concepts that are assumed you have learned in your algebra class. During this course you will be taught the correct application of these mathematical concepts to chemistry. You are also required to have completed Chemistry 41: General Chemistry, Part 1.

Course Learning Outcomes

The main purpose of this course is to help you become proficient in core principles of chemistry.

Here are some of the main things you will learn to do:

  1. Organize the elements that make up our Earth and our atmosphere.
  2. Solve, in a common-sense fashion, chemical problems dealing with results from an experiment and/or reaction.
  3. Discuss atoms—their makeup, what they do, and how they do it

  2. Periodic Table of Elements (included in course materials)
  3. Virtual Chem Lab CD

    Note: Virtual ChemLab CD: This CD comes with your course materials. It contains Virtual ChemLab (Brian Woodfield, Creative Works, 2003). You will need to install this program onto your computer.

If you have access to a good high school chemistry book, you will benefit from reading another view of the concepts learned in this course. A text will have diagrams, pictures, and ancillary materials that will help with a more complete understanding of the chemical principles taught in this course. A text will provide historical information about chemistry, applications of chemical principles to everyday life, and chemical career information. You can pass this course and have a strong background in chemistry without a text, but reading a text will enrich your learning experience.

Here is a list of excellent high school chemistry texts. Again, you are not required to have a text but if you would like one then you should choose from this list.

Course Organization

Assignments

Self Check Assignments

At the end of each lesson in each lesson, you will have the opportunity to complete a few self check questions. These questions are designed to prepare you for your unit quizzes and your final exam. These questions test your understanding of the material and are not graded. If you miss several of these questions, make sure you go back, and review the course material before continuing to the next lesson.

Unit Quizzes

All unit quizzes will be computer-graded multiple-choice assignments containing questions about what you have learned. Make sure that you have carefully read the discussion material and utilize the “You Try It” problem-solving segments before each unit quiz, as these assignments will ask you to apply what you have learned in each unit. These quizzes consist of questions that will test your understanding of the lessons and concepts learned in each unit.

Review Quizzes

This course contains two review quizzes. Like the unit quizzes, these assignments consist of multiple-choice questions that will test your understanding of the outcomes and concepts learned in the course. The first review covers the concepts learned in units 1–4; the second review covers the concepts learned in the entire course. Because these assignments cover concepts from several different units, they are much longer than the unit quizzes.

To prepare for these review quizzes, review all of the self check and unit quiz questions from the previous units, and make sure you review the lessons and the readings from each unit. There are also review segments at the start of each review quiz to help you focus on key points of learning.

Exams

The exam has 64 multiple choice questions and is closed notes/book. Students will be allowed to use their periodic table, the solubility rules sheet, and the Inorganic Chemical Nomenclature handouts IF they have not made any notes or other markings on them. They may also use any calculator.

To prepare for the final exam, review all of the Self Check and quiz questions. Questions on the final exam will cover all of the discussion material in the course.

Summary: 10 computer-graded assignments; may be resubmitted once for a fee

Final Exam

Summary: 1 proctored computer-graded exam, may retake once for a fee, must pass with at least a fifty percent to earn credit for the course

You have 1 year to complete this course. You may purchase one 3-month extension if you need more than a year to complete the course.
