Prerequisites

Eighth-grade math part 1 (MATH 035), or its eighth-grade equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

After you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Simplify roots and solve equations with roots; use radicals in the Pythagorean theorem to analyze triangles and the distance between points.
  2. Evaluate the relationship between angles and find the measure of angles formed by a transversal and polygons.
  3. Use different transformations to move figures on a coordinate plane.
  4. Determine if figures are similar or congruent using transformations and informal arguments.
  5. Find the volume and missing measures of cylinders, cones, hemispheres, spheres, and composite figures.
  6. Construct and interpret two-way tables, including their relative frequencies; construct and interpret scatter plots and lines of best fit (trend lines) and then make predictions using the information.

Texas Instruments Explorer 30 (TI-30) or other graphing calculator with similar capabilities; this is the same calculator used in MATH 035.

Course Organization

Assignments

Eighth-grade math is a continuation of the introduction to basic math concepts that began in the seventh-grade courses. MATH 35 was part 1 of eighth-grade math; MATH 37 is part 2.

Several components need to be completed to help you be successful in this course. You should do the following:

  1. Complete all self-check questions at the end of each lesson. Although these are not graded, it is essential that you practice the skills you will be learning.
  2. Complete the reviews at the end of each unit. You can consider these assignments practice quizzes to make sure you are ready to complete the unit assignment.
  3. Complete all six units and the required unit assignment for each. Unit assignments count for 60 percent of your course grade, so you should do your best on them.

Exams

The comprehensive final examination consists of multiple-choice questions from the 6 units.

Grading

Your final grade will be a combination of the following:

  1. the combined average of all submitted unit assignments (60 percent of your total grade)
  2. the completion of the comprehensive final examination (40 percent of your total grade)

Final Exam

Summary: 1 proctored computer-graded exam, may retake once for a fee, must pass with at least a sixty percent to earn credit for the course

You have 1 year to complete this course. You may purchase one 3-month extension if you need more than a year to complete the course.
