The following is a description of the quizzes, assignments, and tests, along with how they will be graded.
There will be 15 quizzes, one following each reading. Each quiz is composed of 10 questions on the chapter you just finished reading. The questions are each worth a point and will be either true/false or multiple-choice. They range from easy to medium to hard with a fairly even mix of each level. They will cover all learning objectives from the chapter. Quizzes are always closed-book, closed-note, and closed-neighbor. Don’t cheat on these. A point here or there is not worth the guilt. Note that the first quiz is among the hardest of the quizzes, so don’t be disheartened when you see it. All of them get at least somewhat easier after that with many of them quite a bit easier.
At the end of chapters 1, 5, 8, and 10 of the Organizational Behavior (OB) part of the textbook, there are questionnaires that examine various aspects of your personality and how each trait will affect your success in the workplace. None of these questionnaires should take you too long to fill out. You should fill them out and write at least a half-page but no more than a full-page journal entry about the implications of your findings for your success in the workplace. The journal entries need to be typed with regular margins and 12-point type. Each one is to be turned in as you finish it. In the instructions for Chapter 1 of the OB portion of the textbook there is a rubric showing how these journal entries will be graded along examples of A, B, and C work.
There are seven application assignments in this course. Each one tests your ability to apply critical concepts from the reading. The first two come from the Strategy portion of the text and are clearly outlined under that assignment. They are the experience curve and the net promoter score. Both are Strategy tools that real companies use to help them formulate strategy. Instructions for how to do these assignments are in the textbook at the end of chapters 4 and 5 and in the instructions for chapters 4 and 5 of the Strategy portion of the textbook. For the experience curve you will also find step by step instructions for a variety of version of Microsoft Excel as well as the data that you will use for the assignment. On the WileyPlus Learning Suite Website you will find two whiteboard animations for the experience curve. One of them explain the concept the other walks you through how to construct one. The assessment for both of these assignments will be a set of multiple-choice questions that test how well you understand how to use the tool, what the results of your assignment mean, and what the implications are for a firm’s strategy.
As well, there are five application assignments in the OB side of the course. These will consist of a short video clip (for instance, chapter 4 on learning is a video clip of Monty Python’s King Arthur vs. the Black Knight) and a set of multiple-choice questions that will test your understanding of how key concepts from that week’s reading apply to real life (or at least movie life) situations. In all cases, the set of multiple-choice questions for each assignment will be worth twelve points regardless of how many questions there are (they average about ten questions varying from eight to fourteen). For these assignments you may use your book and you may watch the video as many times as you need—even in the middle of the assessment. Make sure you open the video in a different window before you start the quiz so you don’t accidentally back out of the quiz before you are finished! The questions consider only the video clip provided. If you have seen the rest of the movie remember to only use the video clip in answering questions. Each video can be found with the instructions for the chapter that they are attached to.
The video application assignments can be quite challenging and so there is an audio file explaining why we do these assignments in this course and how I think about them as well as an interactive power point presentation. This power point gives you an idea of how I go about taking these assignments and gives you a chance to practice on a video clip before you take one that counts toward your grade. Both the audio file and the power point presentation can located in the instructions to chapter 4 of the OB part of our book where the first of these assignments arises
Note that there are quizzes after every reading. No excuses will be allowed for missing or messing up an assignment. This includes messing up on a quiz, such as backing out of it accidentally before you were finished. I expect you to be careful. With the application assignments, this means opening the data and instructions, or the videos, before you start the quiz. To give you some wiggle room, however, your lowest quiz score (this doesn’t count assignments) will automatically be dropped.
About the quizzes (and the tests, for that matter)—I don’t believe in trick questions or trying to make you fail quizzes. If you have carefully prepared the reading, you should be able to get a good grade on nearly all of the quizzes. Don’t get me wrong—some of the questions are difficult, but none should be ambiguous or have no right answer. If you find a question that seems to be tricky or ambiguous, please let me know. I want that kind of feedback so that I can make this course as useful to you as it possibly can be.
The midterms and final are composed of 50 questions each, each covering five chapters. They are all multiple-choice and are just like the quizzes in that each question is worth one point and they are composed of easy, medium, and hard questions with a fairly even mix of all three. The final is not comprehensive. As with the quizzes, all learning objectives will be covered in the tests.
