Prerequisites

There are no mandatory prerequisites for this course. However, HLTH 330 (Principles and Practices of Health Promotion) is recommended.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the ability of selected socio-behavioral theories and models for furthering understanding of important public health problems and issues, with particular reference to health promotion and disease prevention.
  2. Identify prominent features and constructs in commonly used theories and models of health behavior change.
  3. Identify the important role of culture in the context of behavior change.

While there are only two required textbooks, there are additional reading assignments from other sources. The other readings, specified in the lessons, will either be provided within the course or you will need to go to the Harold B. Lee Library (or another library) to access them.

Readings in Harold B. Lee Library

As an Independent Study student, you have the same online access to the Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) as an on-campus student. You can log in with your BYU Net ID and password. Once there, take a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the HBLL website. Doing this at the beginning will pay off later if you need to search for your reading assignments.

Course Organization

Assignments

Quizzes

There will be ten multiple-choice quizzes that will cover content from the theory or model in that lesson. The total score of the quizzes will account for 30% of your grade.

Application Assignments

There are nine lessons which have application assignments. Application assignments are intended to help you become more familiar with the application of health behavior theories. For these assignments, you will select a public health related scenario and submit a 1-page or more description of the application of the theory studied in that lesson. Detailed instructions are in the Application Assignment Instructions.

There will be one comprehensive final exam. The format will be similar to the quizzes.

The final grade will be assigned after taking into account your scores from three categories.

University Policy - Title IX Statement

Preventing & Responding to Sexual Misconduct

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Brigham Young University prohibits unlawful sex discrimination against any participant in its education programs or activities. The university also prohibits sexual harassment—including sexual violence—committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking are considered forms of "Sexual Misconduct" prohibited by the university.

University policy requires all university employees in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report all incidents of Sexual Misconduct that come to their attention in any way, including but not limited to face-to-face conversations, a written class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post. Exams

Summary: 1 proctored final exam. You must pass the final exam to pass the course. (Retakes are not allowed.)
