Culture videos and activities provide students with insights into the way of life of the Spanish-speaking world. Some of the information will be helpful as students move through the rest of the unit. Most of the culture activities will be computer graded; these activities make up 8% of your grade.
Vocabulary tutorials are designed as practice assignments, and are graded for completion using self-report. Students are encouraged to repeat the tutorials as many times as needed in order to master the material. The related application activities will be primarily computer graded. They are open book and are designed to measure students’ skill in using the vocabulary in question. Vocabulary application quizzes are worth 10% of your final grade.
Grammar tutorials are designed to provide instruction in how the language is structured. They are graded for completion using self-report. Students are encouraged to repeat the tutorials as many times as needed and refer to them as they complete the application activities. The related application activities will be primarily computer graded. Grammar Application Quizzes are worth 15% of your final grade.
The grade in the Conversation Café will be based on the following three components:
For example, students could engage in peer tutoring by asking/answering questions about grammar principles, vocabulary, or course materials, helping students at other points in the course to complete their assigned speaking activities, or just chatting in Spanish. Students will self-report if they spent the minimum amount of time in the café and who they practiced with. Cafe participation is worth 11.5% of your final grade. Students may spend a maximum of 1 hour per day in the Conversation Café. 5 hours are required per unit. You must complete the Conversation Café for each unit before the speaking appointment to get credit.
Unit Speedbacks will be largely computer-graded. They will test students' mastery of the vocabulary and grammar related to the unit in ways similar to the application activities. Speedbacks are worth 15% of your final grade.
Speaking appointments are live, one-on-one, graded appointments with the TA. During speaking appointments, students will be asked to complete a task related to the unit material. The lowest speaking appointment score can be dropped, with the exception of the final exam speaking appointment. Speaking Appointments account for 15% of your final grade.A webcam will be required for all speaking appointments. Students cannot use Spanish notes in speaking appointments. You may only complete one speaking appointment per day. You must complete the Conversation Café for each unit before you complete the speaking appointment or you accept a zero for your Conversation Café activities. No exceptions.
These brief quizzes are found in each unit and help you know if you're ready to go on to the next point in the course. You will take the quiz once before you study the grammar and once after. Your highest score will count toward your final grade. Though these account for a very small portion of your grade, you are required to complete them. Note that you must complete all graded items before you can receive your final course grade. Readiness quiizes account for 0.5% of your final grade.
The final oral exam will consist of a speaking appointment where students engage with their TA in an open-ended conversation that will resemble an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Students will be judged according to the ACTFL guidelines for speaking.
The final written exam will be comprehensive, meaning that it will include material from each of the prior units. You must pass the final exam with 60 percent or high in order to pass the course.
This is a pass or fail class. Whether you pass or fail will be calculated based on the percentage you earn of the total possible points. The pass or fail grade will be based on the following approximate breakdown (the percentages correspond to the total number of points possible in each category):

*Conversation Cafe's are arranged to help you with your language skill development. The TA's associated with the course are there to help moderate group discussion in 30 minute increments. There is a one hour limit per student per day.
1 final oral exam and 1 proctored, computer-graded final written exam, may not retake. Must pass both exams to earn credit for the course.
