Course Learning Outcomes

Like other Brigham Young University religion courses, this course has two kinds of objectives: spiritual and academic. Spiritually, this course should enable you to gain more from your personal temple service and help you to have a stronger testimony of the temple’s divine origins. Academically, this course should teach you to:

  1. Cite scriptural and other sources that attest to the origin and importance of temple service.
  2. Explain the history, functions, and design of ancient temples, especially those discussed in the scriptures.
  3. Explain how temple activity has been restored “line upon line, precept upon precept” in our own dispensation and show how the design of latter-day temples reflects the Saints’ unfolding temple responsibility.
  4. Relate faith-promoting and other interesting experiences associated with individual temples.
  5. Discuss how the Church’s genealogy or family history program has unfolded, especially noting the impact of modern inventions and technology.
  6. Appreciate the opportunities for personal spiritual blessings available in the temple and how to gain the most from your temple service.

Course Materials

No textbook is required for this course. All reading materials are included as part of the course. However, if you are interested in obtaining a copy of the textbook from which this course was developed, the textbook is entitled Temples to Dot the Earth by Richard O. Cowan published by Cedar Fort (www.cedarfort.com).

Although there is no textbook, there are two media items that you should receive with your course manual. (1) Web CD containing slideshows that correspond to the lessons and (2) LDS Temple DVD containing video clips for selected lessons.

Optional Materials

Between Heaven and Earth DVD by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be found at LDS Distribution Services under the Video Recordings, then DVDs.

The Mountain of the Lord DVD by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be found at LDS Distribution Services under the Video Recordings, then DVDs.

Course Organization

Each lesson is divided into a few different sections:

The Learning Outcomes section should help guide you through your study. Once you have completed each lesson, you should return to this section to make sure that you have accomplished these outcomes. The Notable Specifics and Significant Scriptures sections provide lists of dates, people, events, scripture references, and so on that you should be able to identify once you have completed the lesson. Following these is the Reading Material . This is the body of the lesson which includes specific topics and within each of these topics is the reading material and questions that should help you understand reading material. Some lessons also contain Illustrated Lectures to give you an idea of what Brother Cowan covers in his courses on campus. Each lesson concludes with Self Check questions and a Speedback assignment.

Self Check

Though the Self Check questions are not graded, they are intended to help you determine how well you have mastered the material and how well you are able to use what you have learned in the lesson. Try to answer the questions without referring to the readings, as this will give you a clearer idea of how well you have learned the material.

Assignments

The Speedback assignments are graded and will become part of your course grade. Speedback assignments are designed to give you immediate feedback to help you understand whether or not you have answered each question correctly and to suggest possible follow-up steps you could take. Speedback assignments are “open book”; however, since they also serve as practice for the final exam, you may want to first answer each question as best you can without using the reading material, then check your answer before submitting it.

The purpose of these exercises is not only to require you to rehearse facts you may have committed to memory, but also to give you an opportunity to integrate information, make judgments, or apply concepts.

Exams

At the conclusion of this course, you will take a final examination. The final exam is made up of 100 true/false and multiple-choice questions. There is no time limit for taking the exam. Be sure to review the reading materials, Self Check questions, and Speedback questions thoroughly. Best wishes on the exam!

University Policy - Title IX Statement

Preventing & Responding to Sexual Misconduct

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Brigham Young University prohibits unlawful sex discrimination against any participant in its education programs or activities. The university also prohibits sexual harassment—including sexual violence—committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking are considered forms of "Sexual Misconduct" prohibited by the university.

University policy requires all university employees in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report all incidents of Sexual Misconduct that come to their attention in any way, including but not limited to face-to-face conversations, a written class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post.
