To aid you in your study of managerial leadership development you will be reading from a textbook that provides a broad and comprehensive approach to managerial leadership development.

Course Requirements

This course is divided into nineteen lessons. Ten of the lessons correspond with a chapter in the textbook. The central core of these lessons will be your independent study of the textbook material. How much you get out of this course will depend largely on how carefully you study each chapter and how well you can apply your knowledge. The other nine lessons are designed to give you experience in applying concepts to your own experience.

Try to resist the temptation of hurrying through the textbook chapters so that you can begin the written assignments. Although the exams and written assignments will mark your progress through the course and provide the evidence for evaluating your performance, they should not detract from the importance of carefully reviewing and studying the content of each chapter.

To help you learn the principles and master the concepts contained in the textbook reading material, you may want to use the following suggestions:

Beginning with lesson 3, each of the odd-numbered lessons includes a Self Check exercise that should help you assess how well you have learned the textbook reading material. When you first try to match the terms and definitions, you should not use your text. After you have finished, however, you ought to go back and review your answers using your book if necessary to make certain that your answers are accurate. Although you might be tempted to use your textbook to help you answer the questions the first time through, try to avoid becoming dependent on your text. You will not have access to your text when you take the exams.

You will submit Speedback assignments for lessons 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19. Each of these lessons consists of ten true/false and ten multiple-choice questions and is worth 4 percent of your grade. These assignments will be computer-processed and will be graded instantly. The even numbered lessons include a journal entry assignment. Your journal entries will be graded on the breadth and depth of your analysis by me. The more insightful your analysis, the higher your score will be. Odd lessons also have survey assignments; the results of these will be submitted with your journal entries.The assignments are worth a total of 64 percent of your grade.

You will submit your journal entries and survey results two times in the course (once after lesson 6 and once after lesson 18). All entries and results should be contained in one document per submission. Your written assignments must be submitted online in .rtf format. To save in .RTF format, follow these instructions:

  1. Type your paper in a word-processing program (such as Microsoft Word).
  2. When you save the file, click the Save as type: drop-down list.
  3. Select Rich Text Format (*.rtf).
  4. Use the course number, your first and last name, and the assignment name for the filename. For example, “ORGB347_LaurenMiddleton_JournalEntries1.rtf.”
  5. Click Save.
  6. Submit the lesson’s .RTF file through the assignment submission for grading.

Grading Procedures

Your final grade for the course will be determined by combining the points you receive for the assignments and the exams.

Each of the two exams will contain five true/false questions and five multiple-choice questions per textbook chapter. The midcourse exam is worth 16 percent and the final exam is worth 20 percent of your final grade. These will both be in Scantron (pencil and paper) format.

The midcourse and final exams are “closed-book” exams and will be administered by a proctor. The exams will have a time limit of ninety minutes.

University Policy - Title IX Statement

Preventing & Responding to Sexual Misconduct

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Brigham Young University prohibits unlawful sex discrimination against any participant in its education programs or activities. The university also prohibits sexual harassment—including sexual violence—committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking are considered forms of "Sexual Misconduct" prohibited by the university.

University policy requires all university employees in a teaching, managerial, or supervisory role to report all incidents of Sexual Misconduct that come to their attention in any way, including but not limited to face-to-face conversations, a written class assignment or paper, class discussion, email, text, or social media post.
