Eighth-Grade English, Part 2 (ENGL 037) equivalent.


In this course, students will learn effective strategies for reading fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; students will also explore and implement elements of effective writing. Writing assignments include a learning journal, a photo essay, a personal narrative, and a process paper. Students will learn new vocabulary and review grammatical concepts. This is the first course in a two-part Ninth-Grade English series (ENGL 041 and ENGL 043). This course also encompasses Common Core content.

Lesson 4: More Reading Strategies
Lesson 5: Reading Fiction
Lesson 6: Exploring Poetry
Lesson 7: Following and Giving Instructions
Lesson 8: A Better Me


Students must read a novel for this course. There is a list of over 100 novels from which to choose in the appendix to the course materials. A novel can be found at their local library or bookstore. A headset/speakers and microphone are necessary to conduct required speaking appointments; a webcam is preferred but not required. For optimal connection speeds during speaking appointments, it is recommended that you use a hard-wired, high-speed internet connection during the appointment.
