Lessons provide a fundamental introduction to Mandarin Chinese, including pinyin and character background, pronunciation, grammar, tones, and Chinese characters (simplified). Beyond traditional course material, this course makes use of a Conversation Café that gives students the opportunity to speak with other students, teaching assistants, and the instructor to practice what they are learning. This is the first course in a four-part Chinese series (CHIN 041, CHIN 043, CHIN 051, CHIN 053).

Lesson 5: Studies
Lesson 6: Review of Units 2-5
Lesson 7: Introductions

This course is not supported on Chromebooks.
All students will gain access (at no cost) to the online textbook as well as MyChineseLab (the online interactive workbook associated with the textbook) in the first checkpoint/course orientation. Students are required to have a webcam, microphone, and speakers to conduct speaking appointments. Speaking appointments take place in every lesson, including the final exam.
Due to the nature of this course’s learning outcomes, the exams are only available in a paper format. Please plan for shipping time.
